This has bothered me for a long time, and a while back the NYT did an editorial about it.
Have you ever seen the sidewalk downtown, with the embedded memorials of past parades? People who really accomplished something beyond playing with a ball.
I don't.
I think sports are a great way to bring people together and form a bond. Why not celebrate a win? Do I think athletes are hero's and should be bowed down to and treated like God, no....They are people just like you and I. American's love sports and I see nothing wrong celebrating sport victories.

championships are worth celebrating, the number of people that turn out for the celebration more than justifies it
