Moving to NYC Schools: Options for 11th grader transferring into schools? (how much, private school)

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out the NYC public school system, as we are moving back. From what I understand it, there are specialized schools, screened schools and zone schools -- with some overlap.

I have two questions:

1). From out of state, can 11th graders transfer into the specialized schools or the screened schools? Or are those off limits for 11th graders?

2). If we are moving in June, is that past the deadline by which we can apply for all the screened schools and are therefore limited to the zoned school options available?

2) It depends. Some screened (but not specialized) schools do reserve (or are required to reserve) spots for students new to NYC. I don't know how much say you would have as to where your child would be placed.

With the ages of your kids you might need to look into private school or the suburbs. Moving in off years is tought in NYC.
