It seems that these type of random slashings seem to becoming more commonplace in general. I don't see any way that one can avoid this in advance, do you?

Damn. I guess the only thing to do is when you're on the platform just keep your head up and be very aware of your surroundings. Doesn't guarantee anything , but I will say somethimes I look around on the platform and on the subway as well and so many peoiple are just in a trance staring down at their phones--so checked out. I'm not blaming the victim , but staying "alert" at all times is bettter than being in a bubble.

This is why I do not sit in the seat directly next to the doors. After the random slashings that was happening about 10 years back I stay away from those seats to avoid the opportunity to be slashed .

If someone is intent on slashing you, odds are you're going to be slashed. Its not like most of us have armed bodyguards protecting us 24/7. Thankfully, while the number of slashes seem to be on the rise, the overwhelming majority of us are at low to no risk of being slashed. Still, I understand that its the randomness of the acts that have people freaking out.

Yeah, it's scary. Because there's only so much you can do to protect yourself.

You shouldn't live your life in fear. If they do a study of all the people who take the train. And how many times, percentage wise it's unlikely to happen. Avoiding a certain seat also isn't full proof you won't be slashed. Just means not being able to sit if that's the only seat open.

Ive been riding the subway for more than 20 years and me not sitting by the doors is not living in fear its living by experience not to put myself in a spot to give someone the opportunity to get at me. Ill gladly not take those seats . In my past ive seen cellphones getting snatched twice out of hands as soon as the door opens, Beats headphones getting snatched when doors are closing, A fist coming in the door and punching someone in the face and an attempted stabbing all affecting people that choose to sit right by the door.

I've been rising longer then that. And I haven't seen any of those mentioned.

You are living in fear if you go out of your way like that.

Crowded cities you encounter more people with a higher chance of them being dangerous. Being aware of ones surroundings helps but if somone chooses you to attack you cannot change that.
