How much are you paying your friend?

Not sure if an out state person would even consider for a housing lottery? Maybe someone with experience can answer that 1.

Some friend....

You should consider moving abroad. Your Social Security will stretch farther elsewhere. By your age you already needed to have a plan.

My grandmother who is 82 lives in Rochdale and pays maybe 800 (but eligible to pay 600 if she down sizes). But she's lived there practically since they built the damn place.

So sorry to say but NY isn't the place for modest income elderly any more than Florida is. You had to get in a looooong time ago. I personally plan on setting up a business somewhere in Asia and retiring abroad. Good luck navigating this mess of a housing market but I'd advise looking at other cities.

And there is no such thing as "affordable" housing here it's literally a joke. The affordable housing units here require you to make LESS money and cost MORE than market rate apartments.

Nice to meet another oldie interested in HUD senior housing! I love living where I can walk to the neighborhood stores. There are several people in my building who are from NYC but find the South much warmer.

There are a number of websites that list HUD elderly housing by state and city. HUD housing is always affordable because the senior communities only charge 30% of income for rent.

Here is a list of HUD apartments in New York State. Unfortunately it's alphabetical by name of unit rather than by city, but it does indicate whether a property is "elderly" or "family" or whatever.
https://www.hud.gov/sites/documents/DOC_13030.PDF

SPM manages a senior community in Flushing:

Unless you have your heart set on NYC, there are senior HUD apartments in Florida and other southern states. Some may have very long waiting lists, though.
