The City Council passed legislation Wednesday that will dramatically limit single-use plastic straws in New York City restaurants, bars and cafes, as well as grocery stores, delis, and food trucks.
The bill mandates that food establishments will no longer be allowed to provide single-use plastic straws unless a customer requests one. That compromise was made to accommodate people with disabilities. If a customer does request a straw, the bill states that food establishments must supply one, no questions asked and free of charge.
The bill completely bans food establishments from using single-use plastic stirrers and splash sticks of any kind.
what they are doing is starting a gradual process of restricting the use plastics in the city.
This is being done gradually so there is less resistance to it.
One of my gripes are the rigid plastic containers that take out food often comes in. This things will take hundreds of years to biodegrade and degrade and poison the soil.
Oh Jesus...all we got going on in the city and they worry about plastic straws

This actually makes a lot of sense.
1. The City is unable to recycle a lot of the plastic, even though they spend a lot of money trying to do so. This is about cutting costs that the City spends, and reducing the use of the plastic. Killing two birds with one stone.
2. Since some of these plastics can't be recycled, might as well start by reducing the production of it. We have one earth. People that don't see the big picture think that the trash and recyclables just disappear. They don't... We are going to have a serious crisis on our hands if we don't start getting smart.
I will just bring my plastic straws with me then. I will bring extras too and give them out to people at the bar.
That is apparent, but we will all be impacted by it via global warming/climate change, so it's quite relevant. I had the same attitude until I watched a documentary on how our garbage is disposed, etc. A real wake-up call...
So restaurants will have to stock them. They just can't automatically give them out. Can they leave them out to be taken? This will be totally ignored.
