I just recently got hired to work for a non-profit org whos office is in midtown manhatten, near the garment district. I am moving all the way from Mesa Arizona in july, and am having an rough time finding a safe but affordable place to live in NYC. I am making 36k a year so i probebly cant go much over 1000 a month for rent. I know most cities have their good areas and their bad areas, but since my first time in NYC will be the day i move in, i dont know what those areas are. can anyone suggest any areas? or even better, any appartments?
For 1000/month you won't have any choice but to live outside of Manhattan, or in New Jersey. You really should come to visit before moving, if you have the resources.

Is your 36K a year before or after taxes?
If it is before taxes, there is almost no way in the world you will be able to afford your own place, and you can forget about any place in Manhattan. You will need to share an apartment with roommates in the outer boroughs. Budget yourself $400 a month for rent. $1000 a month on $36k? You're dreaming... sorry.
At that price, start looking in South Brooklyn or East Queens.
You know, it IS possible, although it's not easy. I make 38K before taxes, and I pay $990 a month in rent. It doesn't leave a whole lot of wiggle room and you do have to budget thriftily, but it's definitely not impossible like I've seen numerous people say on this board. I can even go out to eat/spend a few bucks sometimes - I'm not confined to the house on this budget.
Granted, I don't have a car, or debt, or all that much in the way of consistent expenses, which brings my cost of living down. If you have those things, you might have more trouble.
I will say that it's fairly impossible to save any money, though.
Well with 1000 a month in rent you will defintely have to move to the outer boroughs I doubt you will find anything in manhattan you may be able to find something if your willing to commute in Harlem or Washington Heights/Inwood if not then Brooklyn might put you alittle closer. You defintely should visit first since your not from the area to get a feel for the neighboorhood and if possible I would suggest you visit the areas your considering at night to see if its a safe area. You also want to make sure you have money saved because the deposits you have to pay for an apartment in NY are pretty steep.
You could try Kew Gardens in Queens. You should be able to find a studio apt. for $1000, though you should also expect to pay a one-time brokers fee (sometimes 15% of yearly rent) plus a security deposit of one month. Parts of Kew Gardens are near the E train which will take you where you need to go in Manhattan (it stops at 34th St and 8th Ave). The ride is a bit long - maybe 40 minutes?? Not exactly sure.
It is possible..you need roommates though. I made less than $36k and lived in a 2 bedroom in UES in Manhattan. I had the small room so I paid less for rent. Money was very tight but doable.
