I remember how nervous I was with movers, having heard so many stories of their adding illegal fees.
Want Your Couch Back? Pay Up, Said Movers Who Ran Ransom Scheme
After customers’ belongings were on the trucks, the shape-shifting Brooklyn company would demand more money to unload them, prosecutors said.
The scheme, orchestrated by the now-fugitive owner of several Brooklyn moving companies, resulted in guilty verdicts on Monday for two midlevel employees, Kristy Mak and Andre Prince, each on a single count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The case was brought by Breon Peace, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York. https://vinbaza.com/newyork/want-you...-scheme/47019/
This story is not new.
I can share a story with a start up moving company.
A family member moved quickly. They called a truck.
I helped load and unload the truck. Three quareters
of the way thru they demanded an extra $400 for tip.
I stood firm. I chiseled them down to $100 because
I helped load and unload.
In addition I treated them to lunch and unloaded
the last pieces of furniture myself.
The cost was still half of what a reputable company
would have charged.
Was it worth it ? Money wise? Yes.
Would I put my body thru that again............ No!
This is why I never use a moving or storage company that doesn't have a public face. I don't go with some shady craiglist company.
It happens to storage companies that said I was late on payment and locked my storage and said my late fee was higher than the monthly fee. Then I need to pay another fee to reactivate my acct.
Luckily I had learned my lesson and moved my stuff away already and cancelled their service.
This is how many storage companies make money, scamming customers using unregulated methods.

The last time I moved I hired a U-Haul truck and movers through U-Haul for the heavy stuff. Movers through U-Haul are legit. If you need the movers to drive the truck that costs more.

Actually, my pleasantest experience was with some unlicensed mover that was done by students, I think.

If they got hurt and you hired them you could possibly become the employer and their worker’s compensation insurer. Just something it to consider.
I know people who hire unlicensed people but won’t let them do siding or roof work. They don’t want the higher risk.
If they fell down or pulled their back out no good.
