I'm a new student at columbia uni and looking into an apt on w134th st between broadway and amsterdam. What's the neighborhood like? Is it safe? any info and advice is appreciated. thanks!
The worst part about that area is the noise and the fact that there's too many schools around there, which means too many obnoxious loud kids. But unsafe, no, not really, and its gentrifying as we speak.
BTW, Hamilton Heights was recently given the "honor," of being named the loudest neighborhood in NYC.
appearance wise, it looks like a dirty block, and if i remember correctly,a big hill that you have to be careful walking down to broadway when it snows. and manhattanville is a block away. but i dont think its really a bad area. i used to mess with a chick in manhattanville in the 90s when NYC was much worse and used to check her all times of night witrh no problem, as a teenager.

This area is fine. I used to live near there and I had no problems. There are A LOT of students/actors/writers etc live along Broadway since the train is there.
There are many students in this area, I have a friend that lives near there, she has never had a problem aside from getting hit on occasionally. It's not the prettiest part of town, but I think as long as your smart you would be okay. There were a bunch of flyers at the bus stop in front of Columbia at 116th last time I was there, you should go check those out if you are unsure.
Also go to the OCHA site on the Columbia website and put in your UNI and you can search there too.
thanks for all the replies. I'd like to check bulletin boards but i'm not currently in the US and will be heading to NYC in mid-august. I want to secure a place before I arrive 'coz from what i heard, it's hard to get a room near the campus in august. any tips for apt/room hunt?

Finding an apartment can be tough, especially if you are not here, but no worries, it's possible! I would definitely look at OCHA through Columbia, if you are an incoming student, you just put in your UNI and password the school gave you and you can search.
Also, are you a freshman, have you look at on-campus housing? Or if you are going to be in graduate school check and see if your program is eligible for campus housing.
You could also go through a broker, that is expensive so it would depend on how much money you are willing to spend.
