Back in the late 1980's through the 1990's we had some booming clubs in the city that catered to all. Places like Palladium, Limelight, the Tunnel, Cafe Con Leche, The Sound Factory(which became Twilo) and even queens had a place near the water called Metropolis that had a big weekend crowd. There used to be huge crowds and house music that could get the stiffest Poindexter off the wall and on to the floor. It was free, you could do what you like, I remember going out to these places at 17 years old and having a blast. Are those days over?
A free club?! I didn't even know that existed. As far as a I know the "Golden Age" of NYC clubbing ended around the late 80-early 90's. I've never been much of a clubbing fan, but then again I was too young to enjoy NYC clubbing at its peak.
I don't remember Limelight/Tunnel/Roxy/Sound Factory EVER being free. I used to hit those clubs up back in '95-'98'ish and they were $20 to get in even then.
There was a big crackdown on most of those clubs in the late '90s for ecstasy and drug dealing run from the inside, and most of them never opened up again because they were being hit over and over with heavy fines, so now they just have the super high end fancy bottle service clubs
Nah, it kicked in after Peter Gatien got busted for running house ecstasy dealers in the late 90's. That's when they started busting every club for drugs and underage drinking practically every weekend, then they all shut down
On weekdays I used to go to a a bar in Sunnyside that had a teen night even though it was not an official teen night. 16 years old and it was no problem getting served. We used to have a DJ and a small dance floor where we really got down. Those were good times and the Police did not interfere with us.

Those days seem to be over. Today its either pay an arm and a leg for an upscale joint with bottle service or hang out at the local watering hole. There are still some clubs that play house music but it seems to be too much of a materialistic guido/yuppie type crowd based on $300 jeans and armani exchange t shirts.
You forgot to mention Arista, The Garage, and that Diner place around the corner from the garage and across from S.O.B.s Oh yeah, and Page Six was across the avenue. Least we forget the Odeon!
That NY, **real** NY with real people---all gone, and not to be again.
Replaced by living episodes of Friends and Sex in the City!! People who think they can *buy* cool and have no idea how to *be* cool.
Doesn't Limelight still exist? Just with the new name AVALON???
YupYup. I went to Limelight after my Junior Prom, back in the day.
