I willing to live in a studio for about 1k or a 1 bedroom for 1.1k.

I am a young professional, and will be working in Manhattan.

Any suggestions for Brooklyn neighborhoods?

Also I have heard on this forum that Bay Ridge is not accepting of Blacks? Is that true?

Try Queens. You can get a studio for that amount month in Rego Park, Astoria, Jackson Heights and maybe Forest Hills.

In Brooklyn, some of the farther-out neighborhoods in Southern Brooklyn might be possible like Bensonhurst or Sheepshead Bay. Bay Ridge tends to be slightly more expensive than other Southern Brooklyn locations, so $1000-$1100 is pushing it there, but you could get lucky.

I don't know where you heard about racism in Bay Ridge. It is actually evolving into one of the more progressive areas of Southern Brooklyn, a far cry from what was depicted in Saturday Night Fever 30 years ago. Perhaps you are confusing it with Bensonhurst, a traditionally working-class Italian area which gained national notoriety in 1989 with the high-profile race-related murder of Yousef Hawkins. Today, Bensonhurst is still about one-third Italian-American, but Chinese and Russian immigrants have changed the neighborhood.

I'd certainly like to believe that acceptance of Blacks is not an issue and that those days are in the past, but I'm white and have no personal experience in that subject.

The biggest problem living in Southern Brooklyn is the Manhattan commute - which is at least 45 minutes and can be as long as 90 minutes if you need to combine buses and multiple subways.

I am also looking at places that are 1200 for all utilities. I have seen alot of cheaper places in
Bay Ridge. I think with Bay Ridge, it depends on where you live that decides how far the commute is. I have seen some places, according to google public transportation, would only take a 50min. commute to my job.

Bayridge has changed and is a lot more diverse then it use to be. The lower section of Bayridget in the high 60's and low 70's streets has become a Arabic/Muslim neighborhood. I enjoyed that neighborhood and lived there for five years. There are other neighborhoods in Brookyln that are closer and you might be able to find something in Cobble Hill or Carrol Gardens. Queens, you can check Astoria or Long Island City.

Just curious what parts of Jackson Heights you've been to, or is it that you've just looked out the window when passing by on the 7 train?

fyi, there are apartments that sell in JH in the range of 500K - 600K (yes, apartments, not houses) so not everyone agrees with your assessment of "bad."

The Apartment therapy blog posted photos of one that went for 500K+ this summer. Apartment Therapy New York | FSBO: Jackson Heights Two Bedroom 3716 80th Street Apt 52, 4D

I think Jackson Heights is a good suggestion for a studio apartment in the range of $1100, but one bedrooms tend to cost more.

I am looking at Bay Ridge apartments, they seem to be within 1200 for a 1 bedroom, and they also seem very nice. What do you guys think about prospect heights?
