Hi. I recently moved to New York for college and I managed to get an apt in Manhattan and now I have to pick an electric company. I only know of Con Edison. Are there any others that offer a good deal? I mean something that would be cheap since I don't use that much electricity since it's just me living in the apt. Are there any discounts or offers for students? I'm really not sure what to do since I'm not familiar with New York's electric companies. I even asked Con Edison and they suggested I find another company if I really wanted to look for better offers. So can anyone help me? Any suggestions would be helpful.

-Thanks.

I might be wrong but I was under the impression that Con Ed had a monopoly on suppying electricity in Manhattan to residential customers.

You do have a choice Your Energy...Your Choice (http://www.dps.state.ny.us/howtoshop.htm - broken link)

However, I suggest going with ConEd as the alternative ESCOs have the most deceptive and aggressive and horrible marketing practices. I would never trust companies that engage in the kind of behavior many of these companies are engaging in.

Yeah, ConEd is pretty much your only choice in Manhattan. You can probably call and ask to see what discounts they offer or google it, but your going to be stuck with them. But if you don't use much electricity, then your bill probably won't be high anyway.

That's not true. I don't get electricity from Con Edison. I get it from a different company who channels it through Con Ed, so the bill is from Con Ed but the cost IS lower.

I also found the sales tactics of the ESCOs to be somewhat high-pressure, and I was quite skeptical, and saw this: The Truth about PowerYourWay and PowerMove In the end, I did not sign up for "Power Your Way."
