Hi ..................................
My partner and I have just moved to Manhattan from England, my partner goes to work every day which leaves me to try and think of things to do.
We are currently in an apartment on 42nd St with the idea to move to Westchester County when we can find something we both like.
I do not know a single person so it's very difficult for me in such a big city, I cannot work as I have no green card and will not be able to get one for about a year.
Any idea's anyone?????
You may not be able to work for compensation, but how about some volunteer opportunities? There are museums that need docents, hospitals that need volunteers, and all sorts of organizations that need an eager, bright person to come help them for a few hours a day/week. You'd be able to exercise your mind, make some new friends, and perhaps find something fulfilling to do. You can find everything from charitable organizations to world-class museums that may have an opening.
You could also join a sports league, take a class that is of interest to you in the arts, or perhaps avail yourself of all of the cultural opportunities of the city, immersing yourself in the myriad of museums. This, however, may not be an easy way to meet people, but you could also explore seminars and such that are offered by museums as a way to meet some new people, potentially.
There's so much to do in NYC that it can be daunting to know where to start, but look at what you like to do and then see if you can find something related to that as a bridge to making new friends.
Take a class. Is there anything you have always wanted to learn but didn't have time? There are tons of places to take classes, such as The 92nd St. Y, the New School, various cooking schools, NYU Continuing Ed, etc.
Just google whatever you want to learn and put NYC after it, like Spanish classes nyc. There should be many options. I think you'll be able to meet people that way. Also, if you haven't heard about it, check out Use the Internet to get off the Internet! - Meetup.com .
