I just read an article about a proposal for a light rail that runs cross-town in Manhattan. Im surprised it hasnt happened yet. It would eleviate traffic by alot and would just make traveling easier. Anyone got anymore info on this?

Where did you see this? I am more than curious and yes, any new public transportation system can only help "alleviate" traffic.

Oy. This has been in the rumor mill for a few years. There is a proposal for a light rail transit system on 42nd Street. The street would be closed to automobile traffic, sidewalks widened, and a light rail running down the center. One of the idea's advocacy groups, vision42, has been trying to gain political support for LRT. I believe the Regional Plan Association is behind it, but the agencies that really matter (city, MPO, FTA, etc) are not convinced.

I wish we had something like light rail on Long Island..the traffic is insane and the cost of a second car is not in our budget. It's crazy how 'car dependent' we have become. At least in NYC you can walk..here you get run over by some 16 year old with daddy's car (or his own...)

I've seen that website, vision42. Beautiful plan, but- I'm sure they know our politicians will never ever turn 42nd street into a pedestrian street with a lightrail.

Why? There are two cross town trains running below. The flushing line/7 train and the Grand Central/Times Square Shuttle. This only sounds like a great idea if you are a contractor and stand to make out on the deal.

the 7 doesnt go far enough West. thats the whole thing. They either extend the 7 or build the light rail. Neither of which will probably be done.

The plan is to drop the 7 down to 34th Street and 11th Ave to serve the Far West Side redevelopment (if it ever happens). IMO the 2nd Av Subway is a higher priority and it's advancing farther than the 7 Ext.
