I am relocating to NYC (Manhattan) from England. I will be spending circa $3000-5000 per month. Prefer doorman but not really a stumbling block. Me and my wife want a safe area with nice restaurants and bars.
Are you talking about just the RENT being in that price range or is that your total income every month. Please clarify. If that's your gross income, you'll have to give a chunk to the government.

The amount I have for RENT is $3000-5000 - my income is c. $20,000-30,000 per month. ANy help much appreciated.
You can live anywhere you like for that kind of money. It then becomes a questions of lifestyle. How old are you? Where will you be working? Do you want to walk to work? Take the subway?
Do you want hip and trendy with a dozen destination restaurants within a 5 minute walk? or Close to Central Park? Ultra modern? or Pre-war architecture?

Ps I would love something like Dakota (BUT WHO WOULDN'T!) but that style of apt. Also like the Upper East Side / Central Park area. I like olde worldey areas. Don't want a glass box with lots of "modern" aka sh"t metals and steel! You get what I mean!
The Times will give you an idea of what's available. You'll have to go through a broker for a high-end building. I'm sure there are many, many brokers who would love to help you find an apartment right now.
I'd recommend the UWS, closer to the Park. The UES is nice, but more expensive and the demographic is older. Lots of diplomats and dowagers.

Wow! You sorted out that job and visa very quickly. So are you going to be running your business from NY? You might want to budget for a big deposit as you'll have no credit history or proof of employment.
