im aware that there are other great boroughs in NY, i guess i just never took the time out to search and find things to do in areas like queens, brooklyn, staten island and so on. Maybe thats a new idea !
Maybe it is, indeed. You might be pleasantly surprised.
Why do people think LA is only the Westside/Hollywood? Why do people only think Miami is South Beach? Why do people only think Paris is Central Paris? Why do people only think London as the West End, etc?

Probably because Manhattan has that many more attractions and that much more job creation of note than the other boroughs?
If Manhattan didn't exist, I wouldn't see a reason for the hipster-ization of Brooklyn (i.e. satellite neighborhood of Manhattan) to have happened, nor places like Jersey City or parts of Westchester to have their desirability (due to relative proximity to jobs in Manhattan).
Most New Yorkers themselves refer to "The City" as being Manhattan, not, say, the Bronx or Staten Island.
Strange, I think of Queens as Queens, and Brooklyn as LI... I mean Brooklyn!
When I think city, I am guilty of thinking of Manhattan as "the city". It is not too hard to see why, when everyone seems to refer to the others as the "outer boroughs". Manhattan may not be all of the city, but it is the city center....
Whatever. I still think of Queens in NY, but I just don't think of Queens when someone SAYS NYC!!
Because Manhattan is the city's business and entertainment/dining/nightlife center. Just like in Chicago, you don't have many people visiting the outer reaches of Chicago's city limits ... people visit the Downtown area. Manhattan is NYC's downtown area, and it is even further separated and defined by the fact that it is a separate island.
I know that people from Brooklyn, SI, and Queens call it "going into the city" when speaking about Manhattan. I'm not sure about Bronx.
