Crazy NYC question, I know, I know. But I want to know if anyone has ever done this, or if not what other options do I have? For instance, are there any decent rooming houses or reasonably-priced efficiency hotels in NYC or any of the outer boroughs? I may need temporary lodging for about four months, unless my situation here in Madison improves and I can somehow raise about $1,000 by mid August. Ai yai yai. What would you do?

Honestly, if you're running an experiment, you can find a bed for pretty cheap in NYC - homeless shelters, living outside in the parks, or some of the rumored $5 a night, but those are likely dangerous from arthropod and humanoid parasites. This website might help: New York City: Hostels and Budget Hotels. NYC is expensive to visit unless you have family here. If you have a job waiting for you here, however, do your level best to find stable living arrangements. As you mention, it's "temporary," but four months could be absolute hell here. Be careful!

Thank you, Otis_Nevins. I lived in NYC for about thirteen years or so, moved to Madison, and will be returning in August. I know the game, so I'm not about to do anything too crazy. I have a job lined up. Thank goodness I did not quit my job. I took a leave of absence. The economic situation here in Madison is not good. Poverty on the rise, etc. I have friends in NYC who are like family, but I wouldn't want to live with them. Looks like my only real option is to try to raise that money while I am still here in Madison. Somehow. Light a candle and say a prayer for me, everyone. There has to be a way. I am in the process of applying for part-time work to supplement my income and raise the money.

I've never heard of an apartment or sublet not have a security deposit... including those rented by mom-pop type of landlords.

I'm sure there are some out there... but probably very rare.

Yeah, I figured it was rare, but not completely unheard of. I was once offerred a sublet by a woman I met at my old church in NYC. She did not require a security deposit right away, since she knew I was working and we both knew many of the same people. Sigh... Are those days completely gone? I wonder if I can find someone who would let me pay off the security? Probably not these days. I will find an extra part-time, fundraising job and save the money.
