DH and new baby are looking to relocate to lower Hudson River Valley...We moved from NYC to Charlotte NC 9 years ago so we kinda want to keep that 'country living' and be close to the city as well. looking for a small town, 1 hour commute or less to NYC, I have seen lots of threads with many options but the options seem endless! and we have looked and loved from Rhinebeck to Ossining. Love the way Cold Spring looks but again going back and forth with so many options. We are looking to rent max $1,200 in a quiet safe area on the Hudson line prefered, since my husband will need to travel to the city for work. Haverstraw or Stony point look like a better option for us for now temporarily until we are able to purchase land eventually, to build our dream little cottage, but would love to get a real recent feedback (pictures a plus!) on both towns or any other town within 20 miles of Haverstraw. Also, I read somewhere that there is a bus line to the city from Haverstraw and a ferry vs a train line?
I see our budget is going to be tight but until the DH finds a job in the city, we are going on my salary only and that's all we will be able to afford..plus we want to be frugal to save all we can so we can buy land soon, so we can live in a studio for a year or so to accomplish this goal.

She could go West-of-Hudson, sure. Being close to 84 / Newburgh-Beacon Bridge is important though ($1.50 to cross this bridge everyday = ~$339 a year). Town of Newburgh, New Windsor, Montgomery, and Maybrook could work too.
Stay as far away from newburgh as you possibly can... don't take an apartment there, the place is full of gangs and crackheads, google it. You wouldn't be safe walking around during the day.. at nighttime, forget it. bringing a child there? holy s**t... it wasn't named 'murder capital of america' for nothing.

Dreamshot/ckhthankgod: yes we want to be on the Hudson Line, it seems to be a faster/easier commute, at least on the metro north map.
Yeah, the city is insane, they have the Latin Kings and the Bloods gangs, not to mention all the little offshoots. The houses sell for around $20,000 up there, i'm talking big brownstone seven bedroom houses here... so that should have alarm bells ringing straight away. Beacon across the water is nice, it had some problems once, but it seems to be a nice enough place to be now. There are tons of places to live along the train, you really need to do a search on the 'name of town + gangs + drugs' and you'll get the idea. Stony Point is really nice!
wow, really bad reviews/reports on newburgh. Talked to a realtor and she suggested to stay within the Rockland County...any suggestions there? I am so lost with so many counties, towns and villages...
