From the article: "The Herkimer 9 initiative's plan for the village of Herkimer would bring business, tourism and recognition to the village, according to its proponents. And that, they say, would be good news for both businesses and local taxpayers.
Scott Flansburg, known as the Human Calculator, presented a plan a little more than a year ago that called for preserving and repurposing some historic buildings on North Main Street in the village as well as the 1891 H.M. Quackenbush building on Prospect Street. A new athletic center and the world's largest basketball would celebrate the village's connection to the history of the game of basketball, which Flansburg says was invented here by a teen YMCA volunteer named Lambert Will.
Herkimer County Historical Society Executive Director Chris Connolly said the society is helping the group find documentation to prove its case about the origins of basketball.
"It would definitely change the landscape of the village," said Mayor Mark Netti of the plans. "There'd be new businesses and that would help our assessed tax value. It would help all the people in the village and would be a boost to our economy and overall well-being."
