How did Binghamton University land $113M battery bonanza? Here's the backstory:

From a portion of the article: "M. Stanley Whittingham’s influence is everywhere. It is carried in smartphones, watches and laptops, powering pacemakers and hearing aids, and making the electric vehicle revolution possible.
Whittingham, a Distinguished Professor at Binghamton University, won the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his role in the invention of the lithium-ion battery, the power units now central to modern electronics.
The fruits of his discovery flowered overseas for decades, but soon, Whittingham’s work may finally result in an economic boom in his adopted home of Broome County.
Binghamton University and a coalition of partners were recently awarded over $113 million in state and federal funding to grow the region’s nascent battery industry. Binghamton’s New Energy New York project aims to help the industry take off, adding thousands of local jobs while turning the Southern Tier into the nation’s hub for battery manufacturing, research and training.
“We invented the first lithium-ion batteries and what happened to them? They went to Japan and Sony commercialized it because we couldn’t get anybody in the U.S. to do the commercialization,†Whittingham recalled. “This is a huge chance now to move the whole industry back here. We lost out then, but if we can leapfrog the Asian companies maybe we can bring it all back to North America.â€
Proponents hope New Energy New York will reinvigorate an area with a proud manufacturing heritage that was hit hard by the decline of IBM, Broome County’s economic anchor for much of the 20th century.
The effort has been projected to create 8,000 jobs over the next decade while indirectly supporting thousands more, positioning the lithium battery industry as a driver of new wealth and opportunity in the region."

From the article:
"A Canadian maker of lithium-ion batteries plans to open a $75 million manufacturing plant in southern Chautauqua County that promises to employ 250 when fully staffed.
Electrovaya, a publicly traded company based in Mississauga, Ont., said it had chosen a former manufacturing plant near Jamestown for the project.
The facility will make cells and batteries for transportation and utility storage, and is expected to open in fall 2023."
