Can anyone here give me any info on broadband availability and options in upstate NY? Specifically the area around Sidney, Unadilla, Youngs.... Looks like most people have satellite TV dishes on their houses- are dialup (painfully slow) and satellite internet (painfully expensive) the only options out there?
Any info appreciated.

Still laughing, No we are not in the dark ages. DSL, Road Runner and a wireless company have been around here for a longer time than many cities.
Cable was laid many years ago, in some quite rural areas. Was then owned by a small time outfit, that provided cable to just about anybody who wanted it.
Satellite seems popular with many because of the cost savings, this is a poor area, so ask the locals what a fair price for a house around here is.
A nice Victorian with in ground pool, great condition, and all city utilities should not reach 250,000

I wasn't implying upstate NY is in the dark ages. Sure there may be cable in many if not all of even the smaller towns, but all the directTV dishes you see on houses outside of towns tells me that it's pretty likely cable isn't available outside city limits. And DSL requires that the transciever be within 18,000 feet of the DSLAM 'central office.' which is why even in the middle of cities like NYC or Boston there are spots where you can't get DSL service. Satellite is a fine option for TV service, but it's extremely expensive for broadband internet.

I was just kidding, but many do think that we have never seen a computer.
Maybe the best I can do for you, is to give you the contact info of the providers.
Time Warner cable
removed for the tel co. They do have quite a few remote terminals active
I live at 18400 from the Co and get 2 megs
The WISP would of course be line of sight
