Best Area for Hunting and Fishing in Hudson Valley/Catskills/Western Connecticut? (Hyde Park: sales)

So I am looking into buying some property, perhaps an old farm if the wife agrees, somewhere upstate, within a 2 h drive of NYC where we currently live. We are pretty atypical urbanites as we are serious outdoors enthusiasts especially into deer/waterfowl hunting and trout fishing. We both grew up hunting/fishing.

We have not hunted upstate and have only fished the Neversink once which was pretty good. Done a fair bit of hiking around Cold Spring. We only got a car recently so much of our exploration has been limited to Metro North.

Anyway, I'm looking for suggestions on areas where we can find strong presence of sportsmen, who would be welcoming to townies who know how to handle a rifle.

Look for town/ county land auctions. My buddy has scored some sweet parcels that way. Go to the town halls and check. They go one a few times a year.

Anything north of Hyde Park in Dutchess County, the eastern part of Columbia County, as well as parts of Ulster and most of Greene County

In CT check out Canaan
