Looking for safest areas to live surround NYC (New York, York: price, move to)

I've been trying to find a place for my 6 month old son and I to move to on the East Coast. I'm hoping to find the safest areas surrounding New York City that would also be affordable. Typically $850 or less. Price and safety are my biggest concerns. Open to as much as a 50 mile radius. But the closer to the city, the better.
