How to move to New York city after retiring? My favorite vacation city. I stayed on my job way too many years instead of relocating.

My parents are thinking about retiring in Manhattan too. You have to have some solid income, especially if it's you and a spouse. It all comes down to finances.

Step one: make a fortune.

Step two: move.

Someone with decent retirement income/savings can do it if they get a steal of a rent-controlled apartment.

Otherwise, consider that NYers who would be considered upper middle class often end up essentially forced to move out of state or upstate for retirement.

It is kind of a shame since I think, for people of the right character, NYC would be a great city to be retired in.

Either RC apartment or buying your own property in the city (property taxes are low in NYC). Unless you have substantial retirement savings, I wouldn't advice renting in NYC while retired.

Agreed. Hospitals are close, with very good "specialized" and experienced doctors, everything is accessible, plenty of free cultural programs/institutions in the city that are easy to get to without driving. Airports are close with a lot of destinations if you decide to do some traveling. Also, if you are retired you don't have to compete with people during rush hour traffic, just go out after 11am on a weekday.
