"Broome County will be receiving over $11 million in state grant funding to redevelop the former BAE Systems site in Johnson City.
The funding will be made available through the Focused Attraction of Shovel-Ready Tracks New York (FAST NY) grant program, which is designed to make sites across the state ready for new development.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the allocation of over $45 million in funds across the state on Friday morning at Binghamton University's Innovative Technologies Complex.
How NY funding will be used in Broome County
Of those funds, $11.3 million will be used in Broome County.
The funding will be used to prepare the former BAE Systems site on Main Street in Johnson City for future developments. Plans include the addition of an elevated development pad, which aims to prevent flooding. A new stub road will also be added, as well as water, sewer, electric and stormwater improvements, which will prepare the site for future development.
Due to the 27-acre site's proximity to a former coal plant, the site is in a federally designated Energy Community. This designation will allow clean-tech manufacturers looking to develop to seek additional federal funds. New development at the site, the governor's office said, could also bring an increase in new jobs and tax revenue for the area.
"This region has always been the hub of innovation," said Hochul. "I want people to know that we are building a high-tech ecosystem right here. This is where innovators are coming — we have planted the flag, and changed the trajectory of this region."
