I mentioned these 2 places in a thread in the General US forum, but given that both have very good school systems, have their share of affordable & quality housing; have upper middle class areas, have quick access to urban neighborhoods and nature; are both underrated on a state level? If you think so, is it due to the metro areas they are in? What are some similar communities/SD's that you think are similar in that regard?
I recently moved to Vestal, New York.
It's a quiet community and is family friendly. There are a lot of options for nearby shopping.
Culturally, there are many things to do, from Biking and Trail walking to events at Binghamton University.
From my short drives around the Village, I see single family homes for sale.
I am not familiar with the apartment complexes, so I can't comment on them.
Personally, I find that this was a good move for me.

Good to hear some feedback. I think having Binghamton as an option for sporting and cultural events, along with having BU in the town, allows for you to have options within the immediate portion of the metro. I’d definitely say that it is a sleeper town/community in Upstate NY.

Thanks for the Binghamton suggestions. I found there is Ice Hockey and a minor league baseball team there.
..Speaking of Vestal/Bing. Univ....that $$ donation to the college..specifically for new and upgraded baseball facilities..is giving the school a first rate stadium and training facilities.

Yes and as Tioga mentioned, Binghamton University is a Division 1 athletic program with a good Baseball program.
Binghamton also has a Philharmonic Orchestra, along with other visual and performing arts amenities.
For New Hartford, Utica has minor league and college(Division 3) hockey, which get good support. If you like Hockey, Utica is a good area in terms of support and having a good following for the teams there.
I forgot to mention that both towns are near cities with zoo. Utica also has an arts scene, including Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute, which is affiliated with the Pratt Institute.
Both towns have plenty of shopping as well.
