Budgeting for tuition $30-35k max a year, will be a kid from out of state, from CT, thinking will be a psychology major at the start at least... Liberal arts interests, artistic/theatre minor might be on the cards, likes picturesque campuses, nearly straight A student about to start senior year high school. Parents both degreed/employed, federal financial aid likely not possible. Scholarships might be possible though.
She toured Vassar last weekend and was really impressed. But it's a really small student body. She is very sociable so is worried about making friends at such a small place...Tuition is about right though...Where else should we look? Thanks.
Not interested in private colleges that charge as much as Yale and Princeton ($60k/year tuition)...large public research universities might be doable.
There are 18 colleges and Universities in Rochester. UR and RIT are both large research colleges and both are affiliated with hospital systems. Both have artistic degrees. UR campus has the traditional look, RIT is modern and suburban.
Might want to look at SUNY Brockport. A lot of people from your neck of the woods go there
I'm not sure about the campus itself, but a potential campus to check out given the academic interests is SUNY Purchase, which is right near the border with CT in between White Plains and Greenwich. I only mention it because of a niece(ironically from Rochester) that ended up going to NYU as a dance major, considered Purchase as an option due to its Dance Performance program. It also has Psychology, Theatre and Performance and Liberal Arts programs. Considering that it would be closer to home and it is a state institution, it is likely to be more affordable even with out of state tuition than many private colleges/universities. Just a thought...Some more information: https://www.purchase.edu/academics/l...rs-and-minors/ https://nces.ed.gov/globallocator/co....asp?ID=196219 https://www.purchase.edu/live/news/5...c-liberal-arts https://www.purchase.edu/about/

Another thing to consider is that even if the college is small, there may be other colleges nearby and where she could interact with students from other campuses. So, besides Vassar, Marist College and Dutchess CC are also in Poughkeepsie, with Bard College(another liberal arts institution) and SUNY New Paltz nearby. Manhattanville and Pace University are close to Purchase.
Some other colleges that come to mind are Colgate University in Hamilton in between Syracuse and Utica, which is also close to other colleges like SUNY Morrisville and Cazenovia College. it also has Division 1 sports programs and a nice picturesque campus. It is a small quaint community and it is about 45-55 minutes from Syracuse and 35-45 minutes from Utica. Hamilton College in Clinton outside of Utica is another one that comes to mind. There is also Utica University, SUNY Poly and Mohawk Valley CC in the Utica area. Clinton is also another quaint type of village and it is also closer to amenities in terms of shopping in New Hartford and events in Utica. Buffalo has multiple colleges in and just outside of the city, with liberal arts programs(Canisius, D'Youville, Daemen, Hilbert, Medaille, etc.). Rochester has Roberts Wesleyan and St. John Fisher outside of the city as well. Syracuse has Le Moyne College, which isn't too far from Syracuse University on the outer East Side of the city/DeWitt line.
So, this may be something else to consider in terms of her search.

^Good point, as a lot of apartments near multiple campuses cater strictly to college students. Syracuse has a bunch of them and I'm sure some of the other cities have them as well.
There are other buildings that are on the edge of or just off of Syracuse University property, but the ones listed above are off campus and may get students from Le Moyne College, SUNY-ESF and Upstate Medical University(also has a building where its students live in Downtown).
I believe all colleges have Freshmen live on campus, then they can go into off campus housing after their first year. So, this likely isn't even a thing until year two.

IMO, it would be a waste of time and money for this kid to go to college yet. Let the kid go to work and figure out what they want to do with their life first, then get the education to drive that. If the kid absolutely must go to college to avoid real life, let them stay at home and go to a state college at in-state tuition, or even better community college.
