As mentioned in the Albany forum, I'd also look into Scotia due to its walkability and its proximity to Downtown Schenectady: https://www.elocallink.tv/m/v/Redesi...o19_welREV_iwd

I've spent some time in the past few months, making visits and researching the following areas:

Albany and surrounding communities
Ithaca and surrounding communities
Utica and surrounding communities
Manlius - but not the rest of the Syracuse and surrounding areas

I also want to check out Cazenovia, safe and walkable parts of Syracuse, perhaps Auburn or Skaneateles - but I profess to wanting to stay closer to the central and eastern parts of the state (closer to family)...
Buffalo and Rochester and western NY is too far from my relatives.

Cazenovia could be ideal, but since it's a small town, I am concerned about medical and transportation services (doctors, transport to Syracuse airport, etc.)
Syracuse might work, but concerned about crime because I want to do a lot of walking...and I will need a unit with parking since I will be driving quite a bit as well as walking.
my budget is somewhat flexible
I have narrowed it down...tired old beaten down complexes are a turn off...just saying... I would trade down for a smaller apartment or condo in exchange for a newer building. I love live music, walking, interesting restaurants.
Thanks!

Good luck in your search. I don't know your requirements regarding travel to your relatives, but it sounds like you plan on LIVING where ever you go. That being said, I would encourage you to just give a peak at Rochester, only an hour past Syracuse. You could live in a brand new building in a safe downtown with parking, and all the other amenities you desire.

Very walkable with canal and river trails. Park Ave, Monroe Ave, East ave, University Ave. South Ave and Clinton Ave are all safe urban areas, and walkable with many restaurants, coffee shops and breweries along the way.

Here is the neighborhood I'm speaking of. They filled in an expressway and built this:

Cazenovia is about 25-30 minutes or so from Syracuse and you also have a medical center in Fayetteville(another village east of Syracuse worth looking into) about 20 minutes away(North East Medical Center near the Fayetteville Towne Center shopping center, which also has a YMCA). There is this primary care center in Cazenovia as well: https://www.sjhsyr.org/location/st-j...care-cazenovia So, you wouldn’t be too far from medical facilities.

The airport is 30-35 minutes away.

As mentioned before, Syracuse, which is the 5th biggest city in the state; varies in terms of crime. If you are looking to walk and want to be close to medical facilities, I’d say to look at East Side neighborhoods like Meadowbrook, University, parts of Outer Comstock or some of the outer neighborhoods on other sides of town.

To be honest, I think you would also like Liverpool(village). You have the big Onondaga Lake Park, some restaurants, a nice library, a couple of cafes, live music during the summer in the middle of the village in Johnson Park, close to the airport, short drive to North Medical on West Taft Road/St. Joseph’s Hospital on the city’s North Side and even the multiple hospitals on University Hill(University Hospital, Crouse Hospital and even one of the better VA Hospitals in the country).

I will say, with Fayetteville, a village within the town of Manlius and just north of the village of Manlius, it is really a self contained community. Meaning, you really don’t have to leave it for much of anything. With the Fayetteville Town Center it has stores such as Target, Kohl’s, a Tops Supermarket, a Stickley Furniture Outlet, a Jos. A Bank, Panera Bread, Carrabba’s, Reb Robin, Tully’s, L.L. Bean, Walgreens, Bonefish Grill and more: https://corcompanies.com/property/to...yetteville-ny/ There are cafes and restaurants outside of that center and a historic site such as this home: https://matildajoslyngage.org/ So, that is another community that comes to mind.

If you check out the University Hospital thread in the Syracuse forum, I posted some information about apartments and other information. You can also check out the Upstate NY apartments and condos thread.

I’d even say a city such as Auburn(about 28,000 people) could be in the mix, but my slight hang up with it is the healthcare aspect. It has a hospital, but I’m not sure if it would fulfill the healthcare needs to the extent that you need them and that would mean a 30 minute or so trip to say Community General outside of Syracuse. Besides that, it has a solid, walkable Downtown with the Auburn Public Theater, a Wegmans, Schweinfurth Art Gallery, a nice historic library and some history. It also has live professional theatre from late Spring into the early Fall at the Merry Go Round Theatre at Emerson Park: https://therevtheatre.com/ Public Theater and Schweinfurth information: https://auburnpublictheater.org/

Geneva, while even smaller(about 14,000 people(, does have the Smith Art Center in its Downtown and Hobart William Smith Colleges offers some other events as well. Some information: https://thesmith.org/
https://www.hws.edu/offices/davis-gallery/default.aspx
https://www.hws.edu/news/calendar.aspx

Cohoes, a small city of about 16,000 north of Albany/west of Troy also has this art centre in its revitalizing Downtown: https://www.thecohoesmusichall.org/

I thought about Oswego(about 18,000), which is a bit north of the Thruway, but is connected to it via Route/I-481 within 30 minutes or so, as Oswego State and other Arts based organizations offer some arts based events. Some information: https://www.oswegony.org/explore/the...erforming-arts

Same could be said for Cortland(about 18,000) 30 minutes or so south of Syracuse and next to I-81 with Cortland State and Arts organizations: https://www.cortlandartsconnect.org/
https://cortlandrep.org/art-gallery/

Some apartments in the bolded city: https://www.apartmentfinder.com/New-...oes-Apartments

Another thing to consider is to look into communities with a college presence. That would allow for that community to have events and things to do, while being in a safe environment. I'm thinking of places like Geneseo, Oneonta, previously mentioned Cortland and Oswego, among others. Some of these communities may have organizations/institutions separate from the college/university that offer events like these art facilities in Oneonta: https://www.canoneonta.org/

https://www.foothillspac.org/

So, that could be something to be mindful of.

After months of driving around and staying locally, i have taken a year long rental in Cazenovia, which will begin later in the spring.

For reference, I checked out many communities - several in the Albany area, north, west and south -
Utica and New Hartford, Clinton, Oneonta, Hamilton, Cortland, Ithaca, Lansing, Rome, Manlius....

I ended up in Cazenovia because I found a nice place to rent - it's not far from aging parents who live in near Hamilton and it gives me a soft landing spot while making a permanent decision. Further, Caz is a cute town, although I have no idea what will happen - will they roll up the sidewalks? once the college academic year ends? I cannot imagine those buildings just sitting empty.

Further, Cazenovia will give me an opportunity to investigate the Syracuse area further. As a single, I am concerned about living farther away from services and entertainment and the airport and the Amtrak station.
I grew up in upstate NY but I have lived away so long, I am concerned about seasonal mindset in the long winters...likely will have to get away for a couple months...
As a retiree, I checked out some 55+ communities during my search - it's not like Florida where those communities are active - in these upstate communities, seems like 55+ means wheelchairs and walkers - no offense, just my observation.

I may end up buying just to put a cap on future housing category cost in my budget - I have heard NY gives property tax breaks to retirees.
Walkable, safe, fun things to do - even in winter....having lived in large cities for the past 30 years....seems like harsh weather is easier to deal with when the city provides services such as buses, rail, plowing - I would never make it like my cousins who live on acreage around Pompei.

Peace and CNY.

Wait...So, you are a CNY native? Ok...Were you the one I suggested looking at condos near Syracuse University in the Outer Comstock neighborhood in the past? It could have been another poster though.

I think you will like Cazenovia. Nice, quaint village and it isn't too far from services, as you are close to the Fayetteville-Manlius area to the west. As you mentioned, your parents aren't far away either.

Given where your parents are and given that you want a bigger city in the near future, I'd say to look either in the Eastwood neighborhood or the East Side of Syracuse. There are walkable areas in both and you can find some rentals, as well as some events.

With Eastwood, if you are within blocks of the James Street Business District, you would be close to a corridor with solid bus service to Downtown or shopping in East Syracuse/DeWitt(I believe) and the Palace Theatre on James Street will offer occasional events: https://www.palaceonjames.com/ , https://www.palaceonjames.com/upcoming-events Personally, if you were to buy a house in Eastwood, I'd say to look in the Shotwell Park/Melrose Ave./Hickok Ave./Stafford Ave./Forest Hill area, the Arlington Tract area south of James/east of Midler and maybe the streets in the Grant Boulevard/Teall Ave./James St. Triangle. That's not due to other parts necessarily being bad or anything, but those are what I'd say are the nicest parts of Eastwood.

In terms of the East Side, I'd say to first look into the Westcott/University area, particularly streets east of the business district and/or those south of Euclid Ave. For instance, this is an example of an area east of the Westcott Business District: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0415...7i16384!8i8192 You are literally only a couple of blocks away from here: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0415...7i16384!8i8192

You could take this bus: https://www.centro.org/docs/default-...sn=beb12d9d_18 to here for professional theater: https://www.syracusestage.org/ or you could take it(or even walk) to events at Syracuse University. You also wouldn't be too far from the 3 hospitals on University Hill(Crouse, University and the VA(one of the best in the country, btw)).

Other East Side neighborhoods like parts of the Outer Comstock, Meadowbrook and even Scottholm neighborhoods would be worth looking into as well.

One other area within the city that could work for you personally that comes to mind is the Franklin Square/Inner Harbor area. There are plenty of apartments/condos in that area just NW of Downtown Syracuse and south of Destiny USA. There is a cafe, a few restaurants, some other shops, while being close to a top 10/the biggest shopping center in NY State and Downtown for other activities. You could also go to a restaurant like this on North Salina Street(some may still call it Little Italy): https://www.francescas-cucina.com/ (I know some people of Italian descent in the area that say it is one of the best Italian restaurants in the area). Street view: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0585...7i16384!8i8192

Or this bakery also on North Salina Street: https://www.biscotticafe.com/
Street view: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0612...7i16384!8i8192

There's also this BBQ relatively well known BBQ spot not too far away either: https://www.dinosaurbarbque.com/syracuse/
Street view: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0525...7i16384!8i8192

A block to the south is this good Mexican spot: https://www.guadalajaramexican.com/
Street view: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0507...7i16384!8i8192
With this cafe and brewery next door/around the corner: https://cafekubal.com/blogs/cafe-loc...town-creekwalk
https://www.talkingcursive.com/
Street view of both: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0509...7i16384!8i8192

Also, if you go across the street from Destiny USA at Park Street, you have the CNY Regional Market: https://www.cnyregionalmarket.com/
NBT Bank Stadium, which is home to the Syracuse Mets, the NY Mets AAA affiliate: https://onondagacountyparks.com/parks/nbt-bank-stadium/
and the Walsh Transportation Center, which has Amtrak and intercity Bus service: https://www.centro.org/service_sched...rtation-center

I'll stop, but that could give you an idea of areas of Syracuse that may be worth checking out.

No, it wasn't me that you suggested the condos near SU....but I have been appreciative of your other suggestions. Yes, I was raised in the dairy farming country of CNY, but I have lived in NYC and DC for many years, so coming back is a big re-adjustment for me.

I will bookmark all these references, thank you.

Looking farther ahead in my life and looking at how I want to spend the earliest years of retirement, I am thinking the best fit would be an apartment or condo. I have competing reasons: I want to be near urban/suburban conveniences, I want little maintenance as I am hoping and planning extensive travel - so i will frequently be away from the area and I want to contain my cost of living in order to have the leftover funds for travel.

The other priorities are low crime, entertainment, walkability and being around 55+ to make new friends, if possible. Someone mentioned Radisson to me as a place for 55+ communities, but that seems a bit afar from the city and I want to be able to get to the airport, amtrak, etc.

Thanks again.
