Hi,
We're a young couple living in Brooklyn (expecting a baby) and thinking about buying a property both as a second home and a rental in Tannersville. I say second home, but we don't even have a first morgtage as it's just too expensive to buy here in Brooklyn. (I'm a public school teacher and he's in publishing.) We love the area, and love to ski, and thought it would be a great place to bring the kid when I have off in summer. We were thinking of renting it out in the ski season to help offset costs.
Anybody have any advice? There seems to be a lot of homes on the market there right now and I'm worried that we may have problems renting if the snow season stays anywhere close to what it was last year. (Not much!)
Would really love to hear from some locals, Thanks!

Thumbs up Do it!

Hi Vel!

I have spent much free time in Tannersville, both in Summer & Winter, and just love it. In fact, I was just there this past weekend for the Celtic festival at Hunter! I have noticed two things: the village of Hunter seems to be booming (lots of new businesses, rundown buildings refurbished, new construction) and Tannersville's businesses seem to have remained, for the most part, in operation for years - as well as a few new places moving in. Down the mountain, the Kingston area has gone crazy over the past ten years, and likewise Woodstock/Saugerties - I don't know if this is contributing or not - but the Hunter area seems very much alive and fiscally healthy! I would definitely consider purchasing a second (or even first) home there, and I don't think you need to worry about renting it out, regardless of the weather. As long as it hits 32 or lower, Hunter makes its own snow anyway

Good luck with your search!

You'd be able to rent it out in the fall too. Lots of people come to the Catskills for the fall colours.

Default Tannersville new york

The Chasidic community is buying everything up. There will eventually be no restaurants, no bars and no entertainment in Jerusalem north west.

Not a racist statement - just the truth.

Look around Tannersville and see how many places have closed. The lake is a disease just waiting to infect everyone. The town itself is going no where fast.

No more Hunter Scene magazine, Villaggio Italia, Ritrivo Alpino, Cheers, The yacht club, Warms, P.J. Larkin, so on and so forth. It is a virtual graveyard. Whatever restaurants there are - are ridiculous in price.

Look elsewhere.
