I have a neighbor who goes on expensive vacations several times a year. Her husband doesn't have a car and has to walk everywhere. She sells plasma every Saturday to make the money for the vacations, and uses her tax refund also.

I had another neighbor where I lived before who racked up $5,000 of credit card debt going on a cruise. She was in her early 20's and told everyone she met that her husband was her "starter husband."

I don't understand why people feel such a need to go on vacations when they can't afford it. I wouldn't give money to relatives with those habits either.

Don't give them a dime. That is irresponsibility to the extreme.

Yet, I just found out that they're going on multiple vacations each year. They don't define them as vacations - visiting family or attending conferences - but they are vacations. The conferences are for leisure activities (think fishing), not work-related. Their vacations aren't cheap. Each probably requires between $1000 and $3000 in expendtures.

Would you help them out? They're stating that they're likely to be homeless by the end of the year, but that didn't stop them from going on vacation twice this summer!
Hmmm, let's say they go on five "vacations" a year, that is $5,000 to $15,000. you can certainly pay your rent for a few more months to stave off being homeless. I wouldn't give them any money.

Going on an inexpensive trip to visit a sick relative is a lot different than spending $3,000 to attend a "leisure based" conference when you are short on money.

This topic reminds me of the panhandlers who are caught on camera getting into Cadillacs and Audis and then driving off to well-to-do neighborhoods. I look at all panhandlers with extreme skepticism ever since I saw the first investigative reports showing it as a scam. It is unfortunate for the 1% that may be legitimate.

I would tell them just what you are telling us. Tell them you do not see who they could be in such dire financial problems with they take trips off and on each year. If they are wanting you to give them money, I wouldn't. A person or family that is poor enough to practically be homeless cannot even afford the most basic things in life, forget a vacation.

Why should you push your values on them? Just because you don't like how they live, doesnt mean your way is any better. Maybe they know something. If you dont want to give them money, thats fine, but the lecture is out of line IMO.

What an original topic, we've not had a single "rich sibling, poor sibling" thread this summer.

Oh wait....

You would be actively hurting them by giving them money.
