It is interesting because upon observing my parents, my friend's parents and acquaintance's parents...
None of them hang out with their childhood friends more than once per month. Most of them actually move away from their hometown.
I would say for the average middle age person, it is work, go home, take care of the house, repeat. On weekends, perhaps go fishing or whatever with family.
I find that the importance of "friends" are over exaggerated.
I think younger people put much more importance on relationships with their friends and as people get older, mature, move away and take different paths they place much more importance on their family and children.
It varies so much. I keep in touch with only two people from high school (one of them is my husband, and not counting Facebook). My uncle and grandfather had kept in touch with friends from elementary school. My uncle died last year in his 50s, and people he knew as a little kid showed up at the funeral. Some people keep those connections, others don't.
After being best friends for 25 years, my two besties and I don't have to see each other every weekend. It would be impossible anyway - we live in different states. Someone does not have to occupy my every waking thought in order to remain a priority in my life. Both of them know that I will be on a plane in an hour if they need me for something. Can't say I'd do that for everyone in my life though.
I still keep in touch with friends I've had since elementary school. I never made a lot of friends, but the ones I make, I keep and keep in touch with (so now it seems like I have a lot--all over the world). I don't see most of them because of moves and such, but I do see them when I can and keep in touch with them, etc. Facebook is great for that and the main reason I use it. All my Facebook "friends" are real friends I met before they were FB friends (or they are family of mine).
I wouldn't say they mean "everything" to me... and to be honest, my family comes first. But it's not like I've ever had to make a choice either.
I have always seen it used in conjunction with talking about someone's perosnal life
IE: my lifestyle is everything and my friends make it enjoyable/possible
I have never seen someone in a good relationship trying to make her own way in life use friends as their reason for being
