I've never been to any Meetup events but I have been to Yelp events.
Yelp events are good for meeting face-to-face those who are on your friends list. They are also good for meeting new people, too. Some people have formed lasting friendships through Yelp. That said, I think most of us come away having made new acquaintances.
Try going to a CMYE (community manager's Yelp event). At those events, people meet up at a local restaurant and everybody pays their own way. Since you end up sharing a table with a group of people, conversation comes more easily.
Give a Yelp event a try. If you do, I hope you will follow up here as I would be interested in hearing about your experience.
How do Yelp events get set up? Someone mentioned on another thread that there are costs involved with setting up a Meetup event. Does Meetup charge a fee?
Yes, there are Yelp events. Some are for Yelp members that are "elite" while others are open to anyone who has a Yelp account. For example the CMYE's (community manager Yelp events) are open to anyone with a Yelp account. Also, there are UYEs (unofficial Yelp event) which Yelpers set up themselves. As a Yelp member, you can create your own UYE---most which involve going out to eat.

As far as Yelp goes, they have paid employees called "community managers" for different parts of the country (and as they expand, the world). The community managers set up official Yelp events that require Yelpers to RSVP. Most events are set up so that you can bring a guest.
If a Yelper wants to set up a UYE (unofficial Yelp event), all s/he has to do is put up an event notice and invite others to participate.
Now I'm excited to try some of these. The Yelp events look like they will be more fun and creative than a lot of the meetup social events. Will definitely share my experiences after I go to some.
I'm not a member of Yelp, but I'd be very wary about meeting up with strangers from off the internet in an intimate/meal setting. There are just too many loony bins out there, and you never know which one you'll have the "pleasure" of meeting.
I get invited to the Yelp events but have never gone. They seemed to be geared to a younger crowd, maybe 25-45? I like meetups which are age-specific. I go to a 60s and up dining group.
