Based off the thread "people with little boy names like Tommy, Jimmy, Bobby, Robbie, etc"
How old were you (if ever) when you stopped saying "Mommy" and "Daddy" and are you male or female?
I'm pretty sure I stopped saying Mommy when I was in elementary school - I never said "mother" but switched to "Mom". Oddly, she wanted me to say Mother but that sounded so formal and unfriendly I never did.
I used "Daddy" awhile longer - maybe into junior high before switching over to Dad.
I'm a chronological adult. My mom is living but my dad isn't. They are still mommy and daddy. I'm not southern. My sisters call my mom different things like ma or mom. I think my two surviving sisters still refer to daddy as daddy.
My colleagues ask me "how's mommy?" -they know it's her name
When I'm talking with my sisters we always refer to our mother as "mommy" It seems strange now as an adult to say that but that is what we say. With others I refer to my mother as "mom"
I've been calling them Mom and Dad as long as I can remember. I'm sure when I was little, like a toddler, I said Mommy and Daddy, but I must have gotten over that pretty early. Just like I got over wearing diapers and urinating on myself, and approximately the same time.
I do know some adults who say Mommy or Daddy. Most of the time it's adult siblings talking to each other ABOUT the parent, not them calling the parent that directly. For example, a woman asks her sister, "What are you getting Mommy for her birthday?" But when she sees her mother, she calls her "Mom."
It would feel really weird for my sister or I to say Mommy, but it seems like in some families I know it's common.
Mommy quickly gave way to Mom, Ma, Mama and a few less maternal nicknames. My father is Pop, Dad, WhatTheHellDidYouDo? and when we are being emotionally real with each other, Daddy still. I'm 40 soon and Pop will soon be 85.
I switched to Mom and Dad at around 7 or 8, probably because my older sister had already switched. I remember my Mom commenting and seeming kind of sad about it, even though she was never one to baby us.
My daughter STARTED calling me "mom" at 4 but she uses both.
I call my mom "mama" because that's how you say it in Chinese so since both are two syllables, I find myself using both "mama" and "mommy".
