Are you on any prescription drugs with bad side effects? Some make you think weird thoughts. If you find yourself having extreme worries or anxiety, go see your Dr. and talk to him/her. It seems like maybe you overreacted, which might be something you should check out with your Dr.
In the case of your friend, it sounds harmless.
It was good of you to check though since you weren't sure. But, I think it sounds like just a reg hot shower, not self-harm.
Interesting question. I'm not a doctor but I been pondering this for the past 30 minutes. I think if he was going to intentionally scald himself in the shower, I don't think he would tell anybody of his plan. If he had his heart on scalding himself I think he would keep it to himself rather than to tell somebody and risk that person calling the authorities and possibly have him committed to a hospital for observation for 72 hours. Most people who commit suicide leave no warning signs. I would imagine for the same reason.
Somebody who threatens to scald their self or threaten suicide, I think there's a pretty good chance the person is desperate for attention from somebody important in their life. They can be so desperate for attention they would be cool with being locked up for 72 hours for observation. It's an attempt to control somebody. Somebody that desperate is a very controlling person.
All this is just my opinion.
Check out that Clint Eastwood movie from the early 70's, "Play Misty For Me". This subject reminds me of that movie.
Since his comment was made through a computer screen, it was hard to tell if he was being serious or just joking. I don't find self-harm jokes funny at all. My friend told me that he was going to take an extreme hot shower. His response when I expressed my concern was "Do you really think I'd do that". And then said, I don't know. That was the end of the conversation.
I would not have ever considered that a questionable comment.
There was an attorney in my town, well known for joking around with everybody, who told his buddies at the coffee shop one afternoon that he started to kill himself earlier in the day but just didn't have time. They said everybody laughed and went on as usual. Noon the next day somebody went to his office and he had shot himself in the head sitting at his desk.
Always listen to somebody like that. You never know!
