My wife and I are expecting in a month. And I realized that my parents have been getting new grandchildren for 45 years! In order for this to happen, a bunch of circumstances had to be true....they have lived long lives, and had many kids, and I (one of the youngest) married someone quite a bit younger than me.
Any one else have a similar tale?

My husband was 20 years older than me and his daughter was actually a few months older than me. He was also 6 months older than my mother and we used to get quite a chuckle out of it when she would introduce him as her son-in-law being that he was older than her and looked it.

People always assumed he was our son's grandfather so I had a t-shirt made for him that said: I am NOT the grandfather.

45 years is really something. My generation only spans 30 years from oldest to youngest( 1926 to 1956). The generation after me started(1948) before 7 of us in my generation were born.

I can't top that ... YET.

My parents have 15 grands from my sister & I (her= 4, me=11) & they were all born within 18 years (I had twins; twice).

My oldest is turning 31 next month & my youngest just turned 13. It's unlikely that my youngest will be able to father children, however, due to disability. The "next" youngest (#'s 9 & 10) are 15 year old twin girls.

I have 4 grands already & the oldest is 7 (I am 48).

If one of the twins had a baby at age 40 (in 25 years) that would give me a 32 year range; not nearly as wide as your 45 year range.

My boys; however, will be my "wild card" as they have the potential to father later in life children well past their 40's.

My "next youngest" boy is 21 (he is # 7). If he were to father a child at say; age 60 (in 39 years) that would give me a range of 46 years.

Who knows (I've only had 1 cup of coffee this morning forgive me if I butchered my math!); but I will say I look forward to bouncing a lot a babies on my knees in my "Golden" years!

Interesting topic, OP. How many siblings do you have & what is the age range?

Wow, that is quite an age span for grandkids! I thought my mil's span was big, but it's not nearly that large. Her oldest grandchild is about 42 and her youngest is 13 (she has 9 grandkids). So almost 30 years. She also has great-grandkids ranging from 17 to 1yo (my oldest child is 16 now).

She does have 3 grandkids older than her youngest son, however. And several of her great-grandchildren are older than my kids (her grandchildren). Funny enough, my husband is her oldest child, but he was the last one to have kids. MIL started having kids at age 16, and her older daughter also had her first at age 16, so MIL became a grandma at 34 (a year before she had her youngest son). Her childbearing years lasted about 20 years (5 kids). Contrast that with my mother, who also had 5 kids (over a span of 10 almost to the day). My mom's grandkids (12 of them) range from 21 to 5, and we all think we're done

My father (85, his siblings are 83-92),has a first cousin who is around our age (my siblings and first cousins from that branch are 50s-60s),whise children are the age of my father's oldest grandchildren. So my father's father was the oldest son and this guy's father was the youngest, and got married a little later in life hence the span.

In my family, the oldest grandchild is 30, and the youngest is 9 so nothing exciting.

Though I do remember my sister had a boyfriend who was a great uncle when he was 18.

So your parents had 12 kids; thats amazing!

Any chance the two younger than you may have a child after you & further widen the gap?
