I am very good friends in "real life" with several people I have met online.

Just be careful about how you meet the person.

I bought something small from craigslist and met the seller at Starbucks. Turns out we were interested in many of the same things and now get together all the time.

yeah I think the stigma over the internet is or should be gone,,,just use some safety precautions..
meet at first in public and listen to your little voice inside

keep it a public place the first couple times.

from craigslist to message boards ive bought and sold stuff..never an issue

the internet is part of all our lives now ..

Sure....I've probably met up with about 8 people...a few were first dates only, 1 we dated for about 6 months. One I traveled to London to meet the first time which was a lot of fun - we met several more times over a couple years for a FWB situation. The last guy I've been with for about 10 years now. So overall, I'd say it was a pretty good experience!

About 1/2 the people I know & I'm in my 50's! Most of my friends for sure & also many 1 time meet ups with online 'friends' from various boards. If I'm going to be in someone's area, I'll usually meet up with at least 1 person from a couple of boards I've been on for nearing a decade. Same if they're visiting here.

The experiences have been mostly positive. I mean they're people, like anyone else you'll meet, so some I hit it off with & some I don't. I've never had a really bad or scary experience, even when meeting men, but I have met a few people who came off totally different online than they did IRL. Met a guy & his gf, that would send me 18 page emails, but spoke barely 10 words when I met him for pizza, TG his girlfriend was there or it would have been super awkward.

All in all, probably nearing 75-100 people by now. Many were 1 time meets for various reasons, usually distance, but several have become really close friends, including 2 of the most important people in my life.

Online is the new "neighborhood" or community. One used to meet people in the same physical area, including the workplace, now we choose communities online based on something. Just be wary if you are younger & meeting someone one on one, most people are genuine & decent but there are sometimes those who play the angles on the naive.

Yep, way back in 2000. My husband (then fiancé) and I travelled to DC for a "convention" of folks that all hung out on this kind of nerdy message forum. At the time it was much less common and our parents thought we were crazy. We've remained friends with several of those folks, and in fact the only people who have made the trip up to Alaska to visit since we moved are a couple who met on that site and are now married with kids!
