Hi there!

I'm looking to move down to North Carolina with my husband. We have four kids. I'm looking for a town that's family friendly and safe. I want a town type feel, close to activities and parks, and whatnot. BUT, no city - please. Good school districts aren't a big 'want', as i'm thinking about continuing homeschooling my children after we move.

Also, not too far from good grocery stores, department stores and restaurants would be amazing.

I'd also love to be at least 2-3 hours from Lincolnton, as my husband has family there.

I was looking at Hickory, but since i'm not from the area, I don't know what it has to offer.. help?

Greensboro or the Piedmont Triad area might fit your bill. A bit east of hickory but lots more to offer. Greensboro itself is a city but feels more like a town . also some nice smaller city/towns around. High Point, Burlington Clemmons etc. and close enough to get into Greensboro or Winston Salem if you need to. Hickory is ehhhh. Nice Science Center and new library but not much else. Easily 2-3 hours. Other places as well but do your prefer mountains or more easterly? by the way all have good schools (public and private) so no need to home school unless you really feel the need.

Skip Hickory. Do you have a job? First things first.

Asheville is a great town (not really a city). If I wanted to be w/in 2-3 hrs of Lincolnton I'd look to the mountains for the beauty, but it really depends on the job.

Hickory is fine, as long as you don't need a job. I wouldn't cross it off yet.

Default Depends on why?

Hi! There are a good number of smaller towns near Charlotte that you might want to consider.
Where you might want to move would depend on where you are from, what you are used to, and why you want to move. If you are used to large Northern cities, you might want to move nearer to the largest city in NC, but not into that city. That way you might have the advantages of a smaller town without giving up the advantages of what a city offers, if the commute to city for recreation and entertainment events doesn't dissuade.
While to-city commuting is always a bother, if you are thinking New York or DC style commutes, you might find NC suburb-to-city commutes a breeze, relatively speaking. My hubby used to have a two-or-more hour commute each way though we lived 20 miles from DC, for example. I had lived 35 miles from Charlotte, with only 45 min to an hour commute in rush hour. In both cases, the suburb town was on the side of the city nearest the job. If you will live where you work, and are city-commuting for entertainment, you might avoid rush hours.
If you are tired of cold winter conditions, the mountains might not be your cup of tea, beautiful though they are, although the winters might be somewhat shorter than where you hail from.
Some towns near Raleigh also would be nice. "Hours from" will depend how close you are to interstates more than how far you are in miles in many NC
locations. Also if you travel rush hour or other times.
You will find some much smaller towns far from the larger cities very insular, even though the people are friendly, and it might take a while to break the ice making friends if you are not accepting of southern folk and southern ways. Cities will have more Northern people generally, if you worry about culture-shock for you and your kids.

Search for homeschool groups that share your philosophy. The other items on your list can be found in many places.

Bella, if you can find a job check out Asheville. Lots of homeschoolers there of all persuasions. I think the weather would be fine coming from Ontario. There's snow in the winter, but it doesn't stay on the ground all winter long except in the ski resorts. It's just snow, then melt, then snow, then melt. Some rain in the winter, too, and many cold clear days. Summer would probably be much more manageable for you in the mountains. It's H-O-T HOT and HUMID here in NC in the summer. In the mountains, it's considerably cooler. Check out the weather info on weather.com — go to monthly and click "averages" at the bottom of the calendar and be sure to click for record highs. Today's high in Raleigh was 89/90F and in Asheville it was 82F. In Lincolnton it was 90F.

Asheville averages: Average Weather for Asheville, NC - Temperature and Precipitation

Lincolnton averages:

Hickory averages:

Did you mean to say you want to be "at least 2-3 hours from Lincolnton" because your in-laws are there, or "at most..."? As is, it sounds like you don't want to be too near them But Hickory, which you mention, is within that range.
