Thought I'd start a thread so folks can share ideas of what to do for the Fourth.
I'll start with one that's been a favorite for years:
Drive down to Wilmington area. Spend the morning and early afternoon on Wrightsville Beach soaking up sun. (Or if weather is bad, go down to Fort Fisher and visit the Aquarium.)
Then that evening drive to downtown Wilmington. Go window shopping and have dinner in one of those cool historic restaurants...maybe the one on Water Street with the balcony tables overlooking the riverfront. Have dessert or drinks at one of the sidewalk cafe's.
Then as it gets dark, listen to the music play as they shoot off fireworks across the river from the USS North Carolina Battleship. It's a sight out of this world.
Then when all that's done, go party all night at one of the downtown nightclubs.

Fort Bragg’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation is hosting Independence Day celebrations Monday and Tuesday at the main post parade field. Both days will feature concerts, food and carnival rides. Events are free and open to the public. For more information, call 396-6126.
Monday
2:30 p.m.: CC Ryders, country
4 p.m.: Sound Express
6 p.m.: Remarks
6:20 p.m.: Tracy Lawrence, country
7:50 p.m.: Farewell remarks
Tuesday
1:30 p.m.: Nephilym, rock
3 p.m.: Tonic, rock
4 p.m.: Parachute demonstration
4:30 p.m.: Anna Nalick, pop
5:30 p.m.: Parachute demonstration
6 p.m.: Lifehouse, pop
7:31 p.m.: Remarks
8 p.m.: Flag ceremony
8:45 p.m.: 82nd Airborne Division Band plays “1812 Overture”

There's also the celebration in nearby Southport. I believe it's North Carolina's official July 4th celebration. I've never been, but I hear it's good.
Here in Greensboro, we have the "Fun Fourth". Singing, vendors, fireworks (of course). Not sure what else. It attracts a lot of people (I think they said 100,000 on the news), which is why my family and I don't go. lol Too many people. But we have watched the fireworks from a distance to avoid the crowds.
My family and I usually stay home, have a cook-out, shoot off our own fireworks. There's a place not far from where we live where we can park and see the fireworks that Emerald Point water park shoots off each year.
We always make our annual fireworks run down to South of the Border in South Carolina. Bring back the good stuff that is illegal here in NC! We also speed crazily up and down I-95 the whole way and when we arrive back we cut the tag off our mattresses then shoot off the big boomers.
The state fairgrounds has like, an afternoon festival, food, music stuff with fireworks at the night. I've never gone to it due to the crowds, although once I parked near Schenk Forest and watched the fireworks from a distance.
Usually if I'm still in town, I get invited to somebody's place for a cookout instead.
If you are going to the coast, go to Southport, but get there early...I think they call it North Carolina's 4th, a presumptious name, but the best in small town, 4th of July festivities.

Yeah, Ft. Bragg puts on a pretty good show.
But civilians need to keep in mind that while it is open to the public, they will still have to pass through Ft. Bragg security to get in.
Everyone needs valid picture ID, vehicles need to be legal and have current registration, no weapons or other contraband (cars will be searched), and expect long lines at the checkpoints.
