I was playing around this morning, updating my iPod with some new music. It got me thinking that it would be cool to have some North Carolina based artists/bands in my playlists. I have a few already (Cyril Lance, SwampdaWamp, Warren Haynes), any suggestions for a few others?

Not sure what your definition of NC-based is, but these folks were either born here or lived here during their youth:

John Coltrane
Thelonious Monk
Maceo Parker
George Clinton
James Taylor
Tori Amos
Ben Folds
Emmylou Harris
Doc Watson
Clyde McPhatter (of the Drifters)

Doesn't really count, but R.E.M. recorded their first two albums in Charlotte.

Cyril is a great guy. Really nice fellow.

How about:
Carolina Chocolate Drops
Lightning Wells (another bluesy guy like Cyril)
Jon Shain
Greg Humphreys / Hobex

They're all sorta bluesy/folksy like Cyril, but Greg is a little more funky with kind of a Van Morrison rough edge to his voice.

North Carolina is home to tons of amazing musicians. What genres are your favorites?

Others that might be of interest are:
The Avett Brothers
Southern Culture On The Skids
John Howie and the Rosewood Bluff
Superchunk
The Old Ceremony

Here's a nice list to get you started: The 100 North Carolina songs

Oh, I definitely remember Nantucket. I always thought they were from, well, Nantucket. Learned something new. I think I'll download "Heartbreaker" now. Maybe some Firehouse while I'm at it ...
