Rideshare service company Uber will expand to six additional N.C. cities. San Francisco-based Uber, already available in Charlotte and Raleigh, will add service in Durham, Chapel Hill, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Wilmington and Winston-Salem.
Uber provides an app-based service that allows customers to order and pay for rides using smartphones.
In addition able to track the driver on the app and the driver supposedly will call to let person know the driver is there.
Uber uses $2.43 base fare plus additional $0.30 per minute or $1.46 per mile is charged to the credit card – no tip necessary. Uber takes a 20 percent cut, and drivers keep the rest.
It stated Uber hopes to create 1,000 of jobs, the use not for local cities but state wide.

Creating 1,000 jobs? Or 1,000 unemployed taxi drivers who are now driving for Uber...

How does Uber get around the taxi licensing anyway?

Doesn't matter. Uber found a better business model. Don't take pity on the wagon makers, because the car took off.

They don't have actual employees. That's my guess. They have independent contractors and do not run a fleet of cars.

That kinda weirds me out, but whatever.

Yeah, I fail to see how Uber has created anything. Might be a good and convenient service, which is perfectly fine. But they're just taking from one pocket and putting it in the other. Laud them for using technology, creating convenience and shunning useless government interference, but not for "creating jobs".

I want to give it a try. I saw their ad for drivers/cars for the Raleigh area. Wait till they combine this with driver-less cars. Just think you could buy a driver- less car and while you're not using it it's out making you some extra $$. You're cutting your grass and suddenly your car takes off to pick someone up.

If your car is driving itself, I'm sure you can also find a lawnmower to cut the grass by itself, too! You can be swinging in your hammock while all this is going on.

Combine the driver-less car with collision avoidance technology and light rail is obsolete.

The person who introduced me to uber said they much preferred it after numerous accidents with bad taxi drivers. I prefer uber now.
