So, I thought I had decided Southern Pines would be the place for me and my horses but I'm starting to have second thoughts. I'm looking for a great area for horses with other active riders. I'd also like to be fairly close to shops and such as I don't want to drive and hour for a grocery store. What other areas should I consider and should I keep Southern Pines on the list?

What grocery store is an hour drive from Southern Pines?
Did you notice where Carolina horse park is located?
I think you misunderstood me. I didn't say the grocery stores were an hour away from SP. I meant I don't want to live somewhere where the stores ARE and hour away.
You asked "should I keep Southern Pines on the list". Why would you not keep it on the list? The SP/Pinehurst area is a great place for horse owners. If you tell us why you're having second thoughts perhaps we can help you find a better alternative, or convince you that your concerns are unfounded.
What kind of horses do you have and what type of riding?
Southern Pines is great for the sport horse disciplines.... h/j, eventing, dressage, driving, etc. Love Valley is "old west." They are apples and oranges, and it's doubtful that both would be appealing to the same person.
If you are drawn to Southern Pines, you might also like Tryon.
There is a supermarket on Broad Street in downtown Southern Pines and a Fresh Market. Aberdeen (which abuts SP) has 2, 2 in Whispering Pines, 2 in West End.
I think NC is pretty horse friendly. I pass horse farms in the western part of the Triangle all the time. Lots up around the Triad (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, too). I have a friend whose kids ride competitively.
