I grew up in NC and lived there until 2003. K-12 education was at the bottom, ranked with Guam, and religious nuts ran government. Much of the rural population was insanely conservative, racist, anti-gay, anti-foreigner, anti-feminist, and anti-secular. The current political situation is sad but hardly surprising. I'm very impressed with the national outrage, however! The times, they are a-changin'.
I guess at this point that North Carolina has ceded its "Leader of the New South" role to Georgia ...not that Georgia is any prize. Now, North Carolina is in the running for the "Most likely to be Mistaken for Mississippi Award".

I'd have to disagree. I think Virginia is now the most progressive state in the South by a country mile.

Hm... The only thing Nathan Deal loves more than discrimination is money, and he saw how much he stood to lose by signing that bill into law. And the only reason Virginia doesn't have a dog in this race is because Cuccinnelli lost the gubernatorial race by a few thousand votes.
But you guys are right, they are leagues ahead of us now.
Vote. Get others to vote too. This is the ONLY way this changes. Even then, with the gerrymandering, I'm not certain a dent can be made in the representation. Even somewhat "fair" districting would be an improvement.

I second that opinion! "Pat the Airhead" has got to go and ...if a few of the local yokel RWNJs can be sent packing, so much the better!! There are too many politicians in this state that are a few sandwiches short of a picnic in the brains department, and when they open their mouths, damage the image of NC. It's time to stop the stupidity!!
