The Charlotte metropolitan area moves from 2,424,643 in 2015 to 2,474,314 in 2016, an increase of 49,671.
The Raleigh metropolitan area moves from 1,271,381 to 1,302,946, an increase of 31,565.

Nearly all of Johnston's growth is likely west of I-95. Go east of I-95 and I bet it's a different story. Having been through there numerous times, the eastern half of JoCo might as well be part of Wayne County.

Clearly it's mostly in Clayton near the Wake County border.

You're right. SC's York county is the fastest growing percentage wise in the MSA and numbers wise (after Mecklenburg). Lancaster and Chester are also included. That's over 350,000 in SC that's included in the Charlotte MSA
