Selling used car, private party, how long does seller have to drive it? (Charlotte: insurance, how much)

We are selling our car and to do so I assume we sign the back of title w/ notary present. Then go to DMV w/ seller to transfer the title. The question he has is how long does he have to transport the car? He lives in CLT so needed to drive it home.

I can't imagine he needs to get it inspected and get new plates before driving it back to CLT but I have no idea how much time he gets.

Seems like you have this a bit backwards. He pays you, you sign the area on car pink slip( it isn't pink...just a figure of speech)...He calls his insurance company right then and has it put on his insurance. He'll need the vin#...He takes the pink slip to DMV...pays tax, license fees. I think there is a sticker he can get at the DMV when he registers it...It is a receipt he sticks in his window, temporary proof of registration... while waiting for the tags/license to be mailed to him from DMV.
That's how we do it. One of my son's got a major ticket when he was a teen because he drove a car for a friend who's Dad just bought the car, and it wasn't insured...Lesson learned on that.
Otherwise, go onine and check what your DMV states. It could be different where you live.

1) Don't let them drive the car on YOUR plates.
2) They need at least a temp tag to drive it home.
3) As to time... how long are you willing to let them leave their car at your house?

That really should be the sellers job.
I know that I would never (NEVER!) buy a used car that didn't have it done in advance.

When you transfer the title at the DMV(I'm pretty sure they have a notary) he will pay the taxes and tag fees. I believe they issue the tags on the spot.

Unless something has changed since I moved, there is no need for an inspection until the car is due for one. Is your car due for an inspection?

Or if not (or to get it done faster perhaps) your local bank should do it for free if you have an account otherwise a UPS Store is often the easiest place to go.

Ah that makes sense, no the inspection is due in March for that car. But I was under the impression when you sold the car the plates came off and he inspection process started anew.

Yeah we are meeting at the bank because it's in my wifes name to sign over the car there and get it notarized then I was going to go to the DMV with him to make sure everything is OK. Or would my wife have to be there throughout the process (the DMV)?

You may want to double check with DMV, but I'm pretty sure the car does not need an inspection if it is being sold. It's probably been 10yrs since I did this in NC.
