How to get a job in north dakota oil fields (Fargo: home, college)

I'm sure there are a lot of posts about this but my 21 year old son is looking for a job in the oil fields. Is there any good way to get a hold of certain companies and get contacts set up before he makes the trip there? I'm sure there are things he needs to do in advance to help but we are looking for any advice. I know its not guaranteed to get a job but any help will be greatly appreciated. We have also read about housing is tough too. What is the best thing to do for lodging when you get there? Are there any agencies that help newbees out to get things lined up?

You are asking the same questions that everyone asks. It is the best practice to read many, many of the threads in the N.D. forum. Search the N.D. forum for your questions, using key words...housing, oil field jobs, etc. Meanwhile here is a thread w/ some of the company names listed.. Many prefer you apply online. Unless your Son gets a job offer that includes mancamp housing, there is no available housing. There are threads discussing the housing issues too. And the fact that Williston has turned into the near lawless Gold Rush Days is not exaggerated, there is a risk coming here.

This is my recommendation and I would ask you take it seriously.

#1 He should do the Research or you if your helping him out as it appears.

Companies
Hours
Housing
Pay
Intangibles ie Chances of getting hired.

#2 If you do number one you will be looking at 5 or 6 states and applying at this point... Apply for all the Jobs not just North Dakota...



Just two things but the Research will pay off in Spades; I have been where you are looking. I am now in Texas working for Halliburton. Best decision I have made in the Economic Recession/Depression/Collapse.

They keep asking me at Oil Platforms how you get the hell way down here? I have a saying; the first called and I was there... If your research leads too big Companies like myself research did; and your should have at least one go for those.

ie Top 10 in the world

1. Schlumberger (See these guys a lot)
2. Halliburton (Home Sweet Home I work here)
3. Saipem
4. Transocean
5. Baker Hughes ( Always see or servicing there platforms)
6. Fluor
7. Weatherford International (Always see them running casting at sites)
8. BJ Services Company
9. Petrofac
10. China Oilfield Services Ltd.

The 4 with () are great places to start your research and routinely hires Country wide newbies too the industry...

Good luck but you have too do the research to get the feel for things. Then you strike and your odds of success are far greater then just showing up. Those days are over In My Humble Opinion. Unless the research will lead you too something to make that leap...

I'd have your son look into getting his CDL and all endorsements he can get.

The Floor hand Training Class @ WSC is $950.00. (students must find their own housing, 2 week course).

All opinions welcomed as to a newbie coming and taking this, even if it means living out of a car, what % of enhancement in getting an oil job do you think it would give a newcomer, who is determined to live and work there?

I ask, only because I was reading on another blog a discussion about getting different endorsements on line (the issue was the on-line version was way cheaper but does it mean much as to getting a job?), the pros/cons. I know the college has a private list of companies that they do training for after that said person is hired. The college trains the person to the companies specs.

But for a newbie, is taking this class the way to get your foot in the door?

Remember there are very harsh winters in ND, This fact alone will Weed out the herd, And open the door to newbies early next spring.

Or if he wants a more peaceful lifestyle, send him to the Eastern part of the state. Plenty of jobs in Jamestown, Fargo, Grand Forks. More affordable living, slower pace.

I have submitted my ap/resume online, for a position in Williston doing inventory control. Is there even a remote chance that I will get an interview for this since I am not presently in ND and I am a female?
