Hi all--

PPL has been bothering me for permission to install a new electrical pole on a road adjacent to my property, on the edge of my backyard. It's annoying. Supposedly it's to reduce power outages in the area, which may be true.

Is anyone familiar with what my options are? I guess I can refuse, since they're asking. Is it customary to extract some compensation from them for the annoyance and impact on my backyard?

Thanks for any info.

Mitch

What will the voltage be? When it says "reduce power outages," I suspect that it will be 23 to 69 kilovolts not the 440 volts on the power line that connects to your house. Check your deed to see if the power company has an easement on your property.

Not sure about the voltage. But if there was already an easement they wouldn't be needing my permission, and I don't recall seeing an easement in my deed, which is where it must be.

Is there a number to contact the utility company and have you done so? If you have a survey map of your property, easements will be noted although they may not be on the deed. If there are 0 easements, you can ignore the company or demand payment although utilities usually pay $0 for an easement to connect you to your house.

The utility's right-of-way person has already contacted me. As I said, if there was an easement for the spot they want to use they would not have to ask my permission -- an easement is a right to use. So I can be sure there is no easement. And this new pole is not for service to my house -- he said it was to make their area network better. I have no problem with that, but if it will impact my backyard view for the benefit of all I would like some compensation. So I'm asking if anyone has an idea what reasonable compensation would be.

I don't know what your compensation should be, but I'm going to add something to keep in mind. PP&L may periodically need to send crews onto your property to trim trees, and if a tree does come down on that line during a storm they will need access. This may cause unforeseen inconvenience to you, when you are getting no benefit. Just something to think about.

I have a Met Ed pole on my property, which I asked for, and they did send a crew up free of charge to cut a tree that had fallen on the wires. Again, the crew was sent at my request and they blocked my driveway for about an hour but it was no big deal since it's "my" pole and I'm the only customer using it.
