Does anyone know of an economical landscaper who will install sod? I recently moved into a house in Winona Lakes and I need a back yard!

Default Maybe Hydroseed

I have been told that some people get good results quickly with hydroseeding, especially effective in new/fringe areas that need to get going quickly.

Blown seeds with built in mulch and fertilizer. I have not compared pricing but it is claimed to often be a lot cheaper than sod. My experience with it was in CT so I have no local references or contacts but I assume there are some.

Reese's Excavating/Landscaping in Gouldsboro did hydroseeding for us. Give them a call. It might be cheaper and a lot easier than doing it yourself.

While sod looks great, it is a pain. Our neighbour here did sod and is constantly having problems with it 8 years later. We seeded, my dh does weed control etc and it looks great.
The sod has a very short root system where as natural grass has a deeper root system. A lot of people now are doing hydroseeding and it works also.

I'll try this again....apparently my previous post gave the impression of advertising...sorry. Here goes again. Here is the process:

1. Call a local excavator to bring you some topsoil, if you are in Winona Lakes..you'll need it. Try Billy Reese Excavation in Gouldsboro 570-842-7555 or Chris Herbener 570-233-1569. Both come highly recommended & work nexpensively.

2. Buy Penn State Seed company Pa blend...a mix of fescue, rye, & bluegrass that performs well for our climate & soil conditions. Get a bag of slow release lime & organic fertilizer as well (because of your well, you do not want contaminants).

3. Spread the topsoil, seed, fert, & lime.

4. Take your 6' x 110' rolled hay, spread it out over the newly planted grass & water.

I did 2600 sq/ft of lawn....(3) loads of topsoil - $1000-$1200, Grass seed, lime & fert - $170, (4) rolls of hay with mesh ($160). Total cost of new lawn...less than $2000. Sod will run you $4000 for the same job & you'll be watering it for 2 hrs every day. If you do go with sod, make sure you do water it faithfully, or you will lose it. Best of Luck!! DM me if you have any additional questions.
