Wow! That's a big hike, but it will help those who commute by commuter train.

That is what I am hoping. I am looking to live in Haymarket but work in Alexandriaand this increase will mean I only have to pay $50/month to commute via VRE/Metro.

The money I save will go towards therapy for my mental condition.

LOL, hey I'm all for for that... extra money to save the sanity of federal employees is a good thing!

Very funny! If it's any consolation, commuting by VRE is nothing like metro. Depending on when you travel, you can get a seat, relax and enjoy the trip.

Actually, I am one of those strange birds who actually likes the metro. I used to work downtown as a legislative specialist and would ride from East Falls Church to Farragut West every day. Never bothered me, but then I would go in for 6 and leave at 3:30.

When we were younger and would take my kids to DC to visit, we would actually buy them a metro card and they would ride the metro like an amusement ride - alone! That was back in the 90s and they were about 10 and 12. Not sure I would do that today.

LOL, I do the same thing. I think the metro's a kick. Last month we hopped the redline to Bethesda just to check it out. I even asked the people on the MD forum to give me ideas of fun things to do within walking distance of the station. It was a fun day.

The increased transit subsidy of $230 per month expires on 12/31/2010 and will go back to $120. Has any one heard that they increased subsidy will continue beyond 12/31/2010?

No, I haven't heard that it has been extended and with everything on the chopping block right now (including the Federal workers themselves) it seems unlikely that they would extend this.

There was a plan in the House to extend the $230 maximum through 2011 at a cost of about $140 million, but its fate is still unknown. Best bet is to figure that it's going to go back down to $120 and then be pleasantly surprised if it somehow doesn't.
