Hi All,

Is it the norm for nine and ten year olds to go to basketball practice on a school night at 8pm? I hear the middle and high schoolers go later. Plus, is your son/daughter able to practice close to home? Some kids in GBA have to travel up to 30 minutes from home for practices. I just want to know if this is something we need to get used to or do something about.

We have never experienced that. My son is 10 and plays soccer, basketball, and flag football. Other than Saturday practices, his weekday practices have always been 6-7pm. I'd be ok with 7pm practices but wouldn't be happy with a practice starting at 8:00 on a school night.

Wow, that's late. My son is 10 and does baseball in the fall and spring. We think it's late if a practice or game ends at 8pm. He also does winter swim and that is done at 7pm.

At this time of year GBA competes with other leagues for gym space. From Nov till March most areas have large leagues of 10 or more teams form while GBA is a year around rec type program and tends to get pushed back. If your son enjoys basketball checkout one of the leagues in your area. Summer camps are also great. Many high schools run them in multiple week long sessions.

I wasn't aware that it's year round. I found out that many of our schools are unwilling to open for practices. I can see how it must be a logistical nightmare to coordinate. Our son's team got kicked out after 20 minutes because of of some scheduling conflict that the coach was unaware of.
