Wondering what people think about having security cameras inside FCPS schools:

FairfaxTimes.com: School security cameras proposal draws parent glares in Fairfax County

Many things can go wrong with this set-up, even for the sake of safety. And are cameras inside the school better than teachers/staff monitoring the halls?

Shocked that this is only now becoming an issue. Cameras were commonplace in my high school when I graduated 10+ years ago- I just assumed every school had them nowadays.

Yeah I'm surprised this is even an issue. Cameras were commonplace when I was in MIDDLE SCHOOL and that was gosh 18 years ago. If anything parents should be upset that Fairfax county schools are so behind the times.

From the article, it seems the cameras are being proposed for high schools. Are they necessary? I'd be curious to hear if high school teachers think cameras are needed in their buildings. As an elementary teacher, I know we don't need them.

At my MS and HS in Hampton Roads there were visable cameras in the halls. None at TC Williams that i know of. I support their use as long as they are only used in serious crimes and threats and not minor typical high schooler offenses.

The article said that all the high school principals in Fairfax supported more cameras. I wonder if that also includes Evan Glazer. Would security cameras inside TJ be inconsistent with the "TJ Way"? They report very few disciplinary infractions of any kind at TJ, so I could imagine some parents and students might say it's unnecessary.

The idea is somewhat repellant to me, but so is the notion that students avoid certain hallways or the restrooms because of improper activity.

I read that about the principals. I'm wondering though what the teachers think. Are the cameras necessary? Are current rules enforced? Could problems be "nipped in the bud" before they become larger?

Can we put some in the administrators' offices to see what they do all day?

One thing I like about cameras--they're handy when there's a dispute over what exactly happened during an incident.

I know at the school I did my student teaching at, many of the incidents with drugs/fighting happened at bus stops. Cameras in the hallways wouldn't help there.
