I have recently started a new job at Mary Washington Hospital. My husband and 2 sons (12 and 8) are currently still in Ohio until I can find a home for us here. We are concerned about schools for our kids. Currently my 8 year old is in 3rd grade and my 12 year old is in 7th grade. Any information on schools in the Fredericksburg, Stafford, Spotsylvania are would be greatly appreciated. Also any information on the homes in the area would also be helpful.
Thanks in advance.

As far as homes, you should have your pick especially since your job is in Fredericksburg! Good thing you dont have to work in DC because 95 from Fredericksburg is a really nightmare commute. So for subdivisions to look for Aquia Harbor is a good one that is new. I would say also check out near germanna highway as opposed to along route 1 or in central fredericksburg. There are some great places in fredericksburg but route 1 is subject to blight in lots of places around this area so I would avoid.

I have no idea about the schools, but in Northern VA we pride ourselves in schools so you are pretty much fine whereever you are.

Fredericksburg City schools will score lower than Stafford or Spotsylvania on your standardized tests, a reflection of the higher poverty in Fredericksburg City.

OTOH if you value a walkable community/like living in Fredericksburg they are certainly not worth avoiding.

Stafford/Spotsylvania are typical exurbs: ruby red politically, lots of subdivisions, you can get a couple acres fairly cheap.

In other words, if you can buy up to $400k you have plenty of options. What will your husband be working as?

Thank you both of you. I have no idea where my husband will be working. He was laid off after 21 years at his last company. But he was a Warehouse supervisor specializing in IT and freight shipping.

I suspect Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania schools wouldn't score as well as Stafford just because there's less money in Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania. There are LOTS of good values in all of those areas...I have a couple I'm working with and we're looking in those areas. For your family, it will just come down to how close to work you want to be, do you want new construction or resale, and your budget?
